Scripture Flinging
Sunday, January 3, 2010 at 1:34PM
I am so fed up with "righteous truth speakers" who think they can prove anything just because they have a scripture or five that backs up their arrogant points.
I know enough to know there is a scripture and quote to prove practically anything true or false.
In fact, I can go as far as to use scriptures and words of Prophets (which the "righteous truth speakers" think are literally unchanging law) to "prove" our very church and even God are untrue: or at the very best, a mess of mixed up and very conflicting laws and scriptures.
To use quotes to make your points, which are actually just your human opinions, and think you are speaking firm, unwavering truths means you are very arrogant.
For:
Lean not unto thine own understanding, Prov. 3: 5
Let us reason together that ye may understand, D&C 50: 10-12, 19-23.
The works and mysteries of God can only be understood by the Holy Spirit, D&C 76: 114-116.
If we say that we have no sin, the truth is not in us, 1 Jn. 1: 8.
The guilty take the truth to be hard, 1 Ne. 16: 2.
So just as you can "prove" we should not have a government health care or any welfare systems via scriptures and quotes from Prophets, so to can I can prove through the use of scriptures and quotes, very intelligently and through Prophet’s examples, like Joseph Smith who died for what he believed in and John Taylor who did the same that you ALWAYS have a choice. I can take it as far as intellectually proving our very dear church is untrue or at the very least, in a state of apostasy for not still practicing polygamy. And yet I have a firm testimony that it's true because I know each scripture and each quote could be interpreted many ways and for many situations.
So you do have a choice. That choice might be prison, it might be death. Our government does not technically enslave you. But, if you STILL believe it is all evil, then even so, you STILL have a choice to stop paying your taxes and stand up for what you believe in. As in:
O, my beloved brethren, remember the awfulness in transgressing against that Holy God, and also the awfulness of yielding to the enticings of that cunning one. Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal. 2 Nephi 9:39
These "righteous truth speakers" on "Government/Obama is EVIL, BAD, WRONG" blogs use scriptures which they interpret one way: their way.
Well, if I use that same formula to interpret scripture my way (because if they can do it, so can I, right?) and quotes from Prophets then I can prove the church untrue and that God is WAY confused using those arguing techniques.
I call this sort of arrogance "Scripture Flinging".
So these "government is bad and evil” blogs are doing nothing for people. They are just causing more hatred and arrogance. It does not bring people together.
And I wonder: when President Monson called a team together to trace President Obama's lineage, then met with him to present him the gift of said lineage in the form of beautiful, bound journals of his family tree...Was Satan literally listed as his ancestor?
Food for thought oh wise Connor Boyack & Co.
